I’ve been feeling like Elle Woods lately. Legally Blonde was one of my first exposures to law school, at least the glamorous movie version. It was a peek into what law students do and how they behave. Of course, the movie is not accurate, but a small part of me will always feel like Elle. A beautiful babe who is underestimated yet succeeds nonetheless, all while loving the color pink.
Truthfully, this supposed chip on my shoulder is not real (minus the misogyny, but I’m not so special in that regard). I was intimidated by my peers during my first week of class. People seemed serious and high-achieving. Plain or boring. Rich and/or gifted kids. The type of West Village girls that everyone makes fun of now. (Though the men should be getting much more of the hate). This was just me projecting and being judgmental, which I tend to do when I am scared. Working on that. I soon realized that it was all in my head. I am no better or worse than any of these people. No one cares how cool you are or how you dress. We are all here to do the same thing. And school is much more bearable when you have friends. And for the record, there are a lot of cool law students. Nerdy for sure, but still cool. It is refreshing to be surrounded by people who actually care about what they are studying.
I am still figuring it out, both the academic and social scenes. School is hard. Do the readings get less boring? Is it wrong that I find them all boring? We will see. Every day I am learning about a new case. I was trying to think of a good one to include here, but they all sort of blend together. In my contracts class, we learned about a guy who sued Pepsi because they wouldn’t let him buy a fighter jet for 7 million “pepsi points,” as advertised on TV. He lost, obviously.
A song I’ve been listening to lately.
